Torsion Spring Static Operating Stress: Static Conditions

  • Torsion Spring Design Resources – Spring Performance

Recommended maximum operating stresses for torsion spring static applications are often given as a percentage of tensile strength. When the outer surface is in tension, springs with a low index usually yield at the inner surface, while those with a high index may yield at the outer surface. For springs not stress-relieved and loaded in a direction that decreases the radius of curvature, the stress levels recommended for springs with favorable residual stress are appropriate. No stress correction factor is used since the spring has yielded.

Customers should contact CSPI Spring to review maximum allowed operating stresses and design considerations for static applications.
